Talismans: Sacred Symbols of God

A talisman is a sacred symbol designed as a link to a particular expression of divinity. It differs from an amulet, which is worn to create a protective force field, or a charm, that is made to hold a specific spell. The power is not seen as residing in the talisman itself, but rather in the God that the talisman is a symbol of. The most important consideration is that you feel connected to that particular God. For this reason you should choose a talisman prepared from your own religion, rather than choosing according to its claimed virtues.

If you buy a talisman because someone makes great claims for it, but you feel nothing for the spiritual tradition it comes from, you have wasted your money. Although all Gods are really one, you will feel drawn to a particular symbolism that stirs the divinity within yourself. If you develop faith in your chosen divinity through spiritual practice, its blessings can be with you. A talisman is a tool for facilitating this connection.

The importance of faith

The effectiveness of a talisman depends on both the spiritual connectedness of the person producing it and on the devotion of its user. If it is blessed by a genuine adept with a deep devotion, it will be powerful. This does not, however, guarantee that it will work for you. Having chosen a trustworthy adept to produce your talisman, your next consideration is whether you feel faith or any devotion to divinity. Actually, faith is not hard to cultivate. It is not necessary to trust in the talisman, in its producer, or even in yourself; you only need to trust in the Creator.

Most people have some sense of a Creator. This is strengthened and cultivated through prayer or spiritual practice. It also depends on you following the guidelines of your spiritual system in your life. This generally requires you to exercise truth and compassion. Some religions have other restrictions.

Sourcing your Talisman

Most of the talismans you find in books are either drawn from the Kabbalah or from Islam. Obviously, a Kabbalistic talisman must be produced by a Jewish adept with a real understanding of Kabbalah, not from some witch who decided to copy it from a book! Likewise, Arabic talismans should be obtained from Islamic Saints or Adepts.

A mass-produced talisman of an ancient design is useless, unless of course you intend to do the appropriate consecration rituals yourself, after lengthy study. Of course, many people these days see beyond the apparent differences of religions and accept God in every form. In this case, any talisman will work, so long as one keeps faith in God and lives by spiritual principles.

So what can a talisman do for you?

Since it is a vehicle for the blessings of the Creator, the possibilities of what talismans can do are limitless. Often, a talisman will be produced to carry a large number of virtues. This can be done, but requires many prayers to consecrate it. They will be designed to bring God’s many blessings to cover all the common issues of man: success in business, wealth, health, love, domestic harmony, academic achievement, sexual prowess, protection against enemies, accidents and other mishaps, and general luck. They can also be produced for more spiritual benefits, such as increase in faith, clairvoyance, prophecy, communication with spirits, accelerated spiritual growth, enhanced visualisation, and to strengthen your own magick.

These things require practice, but the use of a talisman greatly enhances your efforts by connecting you more directly to the grace of the Almighty for a spiritual person, a properly produced talisman is the number one tool to speed up success on all levels. Therefore choose carefully a talisman that for you is a powerful symbol of whichever expression of divinity you feel most connected to.
